Otmar Issing was between 1999 and June 2006 member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB). As its chief economist, he was regarded to be one of the most influentual board members.
One cause of the current crisis is the long period of low central bank interest rates, says Issing. Euro area is lucky to have the euro, according to him, otherwise things would probably been even worse.
The former ECB-board member, but also between 1990 en 1998 member of the board of the German Bundesbank, is nowadays, among other things, international advisor of Goldman Sachs. ECBWATCH and Dutch business and finance weekly FEM talked to him recently in Goldman Sachs office, on the 60th floor of the Frankfurter Messeturm. |

Dear ECBWATCH-fan,
You are in for a treat. Two weeks ago we had a long conversation with Paul Volcker, the legendary chairman of the Fed (1979 – 1987) who defied everything and everybody, certainly the politicians, and increased the key interest rate to unprecedented heights in order to break the inflation’s back in the late seventies and early eighties. Volcker won and in our view that has earned him the reputation of the best central banker ever, despite what some economist say about Alan Greenspan, the Fed-chairman after Volcker.
Below is an excerpt from the interview. You can access the full transcript on the internet site of the Dutch business and economics magazine FEM Business using the link at the end of this Briefing Paper.
Enjoy! |

Although the European Central Bank is still a relatively young central bank, it has been around for almost 8 years now. It is time for a verdict. How 'heavy' is E in the ECB?

ECB should publish minutes of the meetings

The following article by Edin Mujagic, Member of Team ECBWATCH, appeared on Saturday, August 12th in the Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad.
The ECB Press conferences are a farce. Each time economists and analysts demand more transparency and clear language from the ECB, the bank gives the same answer: ‘we are the only central bank that holds a press conference after a meeting’.
